Tim Sloan/AFP/Getty Images Oh, thank heaven: Today is 7/11, and that means free Slurpees at 7-Eleven.
The 7-Eleven name has nothing to do with July 11, of course; the chain was actually rechristened from its original name (“Tote’m”) to reflect its then-new operating hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Still, the company would be crazy if it didn’t do something special when 7/11 rolled around on the calendar, so for years now, it has offered free Slurpees on the date.
The rules are simple: Go to 7-Eleven between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today, and you’ll get a free small Slurpee in any flavor. The promotion is at participating locations and only while supplies last, so get there early, and consider calling ahead to make sure your local store is participating. The company is styling this year’s Slurpee giveaway as a dance party and has even invented a “Slurpee Dance,” but don’t worry — they won’t make you dance to get your drink. Consider yourself lucky.
You should also consider yourself lucky that the US formats dates as month/day/year instead of day/month/year. In much of the rest of the world, “7/11” means Nov. 7, when its too nippy out for any but the most die-hard fans to be craving Slurpees, so 7-Eleven would probably celebrate by handing out those hot dogs that spend all day rolling around under heat lamps, and no one wants that.
Incidentally, 7-Eleven isn’t the only chain celebrating a special date with a special deal this week. This Saturday, July 13, is the 76th birthday of Krispy Kreme, and it’s celebrating with a sweet doughnut deal: Buy a dozen original glazed doughnuts and you’ll get a second dozen for just 76 cents. On its promotion page, Krispy Kreme lists which locations are participating.
Overall, it’s a good week to be a thrifty American with a sweet tooth.
